BUJUMBURA, Burundi, October 14, 2015/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) continues to closely follow the development of situations in Burundi and expresses its deep concern on the deteriorating security situation and the increase in acts of violence, which results in loss of human life and poses a serious threat to peace and stability in Burundi and the region as a whole. The ICGLR condemns these unacceptable acts, and stresses the need for sustained action against perpetrators of those acts.

The ICGLR appeals to all Burundian stakeholders to exercise utmost restraint and refrain from all acts and statements which are likely to further exacerbate the situation, but rather preserve the gains made by the country so far.

In preparation of the meeting of ICGLR Ministers of Defence on the security situation in the region and Burundi in particular, on 20th October, 2015 in Luanda, Angola, the ICGLR reiterates its commitment to continue working with the AU, EAC, the UN and other concerned partners, towards the promotion of lasting peace, security and stability in the Great Lakes Region.

The ICGLR further reiterates its continued cooperation with the mediation process led by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and urges all the Burundian stakeholders to work towards the resumption of this process through political dialogue as the only way that will enable Burundi to overcome the current serious difficulties.

The ICGLR wish to further remind all parties to respect the Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region signed by all ICGLR Member States and the Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance
