PORT LOUIS, Mauritius, March 10, 2022/APO Group/ --

The High Commissioner of Canada to Mauritius, Mr Christopher John Cooter, paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, today, at her office in Phoenix. Discussions mainly focussed on skills training for the blue economy sector and on ways Canada can assist Mauritius in developing its educational institutions.

In a statement, VPM Dookun-Luchoomun highlighted that the meeting with High Commissioner Cooter was very fruitful and was an opportunity to see how the two countries can collaborate in the fields of technical education and technology. This collaboration, she underscored, will be valuable as Mauritius not only acts as a hub for early childhood in the African region but also ambitions to have a predominant role in the technical education sector.

She acknowledged that many Mauritian students currently travel to Canada to pursue their studies, and the collaboration between Mauritius and Canada in terms of technical education and development of the curriculum could eventually be beneficial to other African countries.

For his part, Mr Cooter recalled that Mauritius and Canada share a good relationship, particularly in the education sector. Many Mauritian students, he pointed out, choose to study in Canada and both countries are looking forward to strengthen their cooperation in the area of skills training.

The Canadian High Commissioner underlined the need to give more visibility to the strong bilateral relations between Mauritius and Canada, thus enabling more people to travel between the two countries and learn from each other. He also seized this opportunity to wish a happy Independence Day to all Mauritians.
