PRETORIA, South Africa, January 27, 2017/APO/ --

Over 200 Grade 9 learners from Ahmed Timol Secondary School in Azaadville, Krugersdorp today participated in an educational workshop aimed at raising awareness and honouring victims of the Holocaust.  Learners watched a video about the beginning of the Holocaust as well as the planned implementation to eliminate millions of Jews.

The message of the Secretary-General was conveyed with many asking questions about anti-Semitism and the impact of discrimination. Some learners said that the Holocaust and the policies of Hitler to eliminate a religious group was similar to apartheid that aimed at eliminating a particular race.

Learners also participated in a quiz testing their knowledge of the UN and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The programme was organized by UNIC Pretoria in partnership with the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre as well as non-governmental organization, Education Africa.
