Government and partners to deliberate on inclusive education to promote learning for children with disabilities 

WHAT:         The Ministry of Education, Science, technology and Sports, the Uganda Society for Disabled (USDC), UNICEF and other key stakeholders have organized a high level consensus building workshop on inclusive education. The stakeholders’ meeting aims at developing a common understanding of inclusive education and how Uganda as a country can implement the approach to benefit children with disabilities.

WHO:           Hon. Rosemary Seninde, Minister of State for Primary Education, will be the Guest of Honour.

WHY:           According to the Situation Analysis of Children in Uganda Report, Uganda has about 2.5 million children with some form of disability. Of these, only 5% are able to access education within an inclusive setting in regular schools while only 10%  access education through special schools and annexes.

                    Many inclusive schools are poorly equipped to assess or meet the various needs of children with disabilities. As a result, several children with disabilities are not  attending formal education in the inclusive schools and the few that join, end up dropping out before completing the primary cycle.                            

                    Despite the increased interest in inclusive education in Uganda, there is a lack of a shared understanding of the concept. The purpose of the meeting therefore is to provide stakeholders with a platform to articulate and build consensus around the concept of inclusive education for children and people with disabilities and how to realise it in Uganda.
