The impact of mining operations – both legal and illegal - is an issue of utmost interest in Ghana at the moment. With the aim of helping Ghana curb the detrimental impacts of artisanal and small scale mining operations, the very first PanAfGeo Work Package 3, focussing on training in the field of artisanal and small scale mining, was held in Accra last week.

The PanAfGeo WP3 workshop was aimed at staff from the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, Minerals Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, health authorities, the universities as well as representatives from national geological surveys in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia.

The training was facilitated by Mr. John Tychsen from GEUS and PanAfGeo WP3 Lead in close cooperation with Dr. Daniel Boamah, Director of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority and Co-Lead of PanAfGeo WP3. The training seminar was kicked off by a speech by H.E. William Hanna, Ambassador of the EU Delegation to Ghana and officially launched by Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio, Deputy Minister of Lands & Natural Resources.
