Statement by the HRVP Federica Mogherini on new outbreak of violence in South Sudan

BRUSSELS, Belgium, July 11, 2016/APO/ --

A renewed outbreak of violence is marking South Sudan's fifth Anniversary of Independence. Despite the steps forward following the peace agreement and the recent formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity, the country is still far from peace. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate at an alarming pace.

The resurgence of violence in Juba and throughout the country that has intensified over the last 48 hours must stop immediately.

Following yesterday's call to the calm by the 3 leaders of South Sudan, EU expects all parties to focus on the implementation of the peace agreement, and in particular those elements relating to security, as a matter of extreme urgency.

The people of South Sudan deserve peace and security after so many years of conflict. It is the responsibility of their leaders to ensure this.

Together with the UN mission and regional actors, the EU remains resolved in contributing to this aim.
