Philippine Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania Marie Charlotte G. Tang, with residence in Nairobi, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, on 02 March 2023 at the State House-Zanzibar.

Ambassador Tang congratulated President Mwinyi for the excellent recovery of Zanzibar from the pandemic and the accompanying global chain disruptions.

Ambassador Tang noted that both the Philippines and Zanzibar are archipelagos, with natural complementarities and affinities. She expressed her hope to further enhance tourism and people-to-people relations.

In response, President Mwinyi encouraged Ambassador Tang to explore investment opportunities in Zanzibar, particularly in the blue economy sector. He added that Zanzibar could learn from the Philippines' experience and expertise in tourism, fisheries, agriculture, and healthcare.

Zanzibar is located off Tanzania's coast. Once a separate state, it united with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964. Its economy is primarily based on tourism, fishing, and agriculture, with the main crops being cloves, coconut, and spices.

Zanzibar is best known for its rich cultural heritage, architecture, and beautiful beaches. It is home to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases the blending of the different cultures of Africa, the Arab region, India, and Europe over the ancient trading town.
