Namibia: Joining Forces to End Violence Against Women and Girls in Africa: United Nations (UN) Women Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda Visits Namibia to Advance Ratification of the African Union (AU) Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG)

The mission, taking place from 29–31 July 2026, aims to mobilize political leadership and strengthen commitments towards the adoption, ratification, domestication and implementation of the AU-CEVAWG across the continent

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda will participate in a High-Level Advocacy Mission on the Ratification of the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG), led by the African Union Commission (AUC) Women, Gender and Youth Directorate (WGYD) and the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa (SRRWA), in partnership with the Pan-African Women's Organization (PAWO).

The mission, taking place from 29–31 July 2026, aims to mobilize political leadership and strengthen commitments towards the adoption, ratification, domestication and implementation of the AU-CEVAWG across the continent. The visit will conclude with the commemoration of Pan-African Women’s Day in a high-level breakfast to be held on 31 July 2026 under the theme: “Women’s Action for Safe Sanitation, Peaceful Communities and Better Livelihoods.”

The mission underscores the collective commitment of the African Union, UN Women and partners to ending all forms of violence against women and girls and accelerating progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa.

Key Objectives

  • Awareness Raising: Promote awareness among AU Member States and national stakeholders on the importance of adopting, signing, ratifying, domesticating and implementing the AU-CEVAWG.
  • Normative Advocacy: Engage the Government of Namibia and key stakeholders on the significance of ratifying and implementing the Convention.
  • Political Support: Strengthen political commitment and institutional capacity for effective implementation of the AU-CEVAWG through high-level dialogue and advocacy.
  • Pan-African Women’s Day Commemoration: Celebrate PAWO’s 64th anniversary and recognize African women’s leadership and contributions to sustainable development, peace and prosperity.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased political awareness and commitment by the Government of Namibia towards ratification, domestication and implementation of the AU-CEVAWG.
  • Strengthened regional and continental advocacy among AU Member States to accelerate adoption, ratification and implementation of the Convention.
  • Renewed commitments to accountability, reporting and monitoring of gender equality policies and frameworks.
