Japan: Emergency Humanitarian Assistance for the Global Food Security

Emergency Grant Aid is to provide food assistance of USD 40 million to countries and region in Asia, the Middle East and Africa

The amount of food-related assistance will be in total USD 50 million

TOKYO, Japan, March 3, 2023/APO Group/ --

On March 3, the Government of Japan decided to provide food-related assistance totaling USD 50 million, consisting of USD 45 million in Emergency Grand Aid through international organizations and USD 5 million in food assistance through Japanese NGOs, as a response to the deterioration of global food security, which has been exacerbated by Russia's aggression.

  1. This Emergency Grant Aid is to provide food assistance of USD 40 million to countries and region in Asia, the Middle East and Africa through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and agricultural production assistance of USD 5 million in Ukraine through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
  2. In addition, today, the Government of Japan decided to extend food assistance of USD 5 million to countries in the Middle East and Africa through Japanese NGOs via the Japan Platform (JPF). Combined with this assistance and Emergency Grant Aid mentioned above, the amount of food-related assistance will be in total USD 50 million.
  3. The Government of Japan will continue to make efforts to ensure global food security in collaboration with the international community, including the G7.
