The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) cordially invites Nairobi-based journalists to the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust on 27 January 2016 from 10.00 am at the United Nations Headquarters Complex in Gigiri.

The theme of this year’s observance is “Holocaust and Human Dignity”.

The ceremony is organized in accordance with a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on 01 November 2005 where it reaffirmed that the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities, will forever be a warning to all people of the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice. The resolution establishes 27 January as an annual commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust  and urges member states to develop educational programmes on the Holocaust and calls for the creation of a programme of outreach on the subjects of the Holocaust and the United Nations, in order to help prevent future acts of genocide.

UNON Director General, Sahle-Work Zewde will preside over the event. Representatives of the Kenya Government, State of Israel, Federal Republic of Germany, Students from 11 Nairobi colleges, Hebrew Congregation and members of the diplomatic community in Kenya will be in attendance.
