UNDP and Development Partners: Joint Recovery and Stabilization Programme delegation visits Aweil

The purpose of the field visit is to review progress of the ongoing activities as well as engaging with the state government officials in view of the imminent launch of the joint UNDP, UNICEF, FAO and WFP recovery and stabilization programme

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 29, 2017/APO/ --

UNDP in partnership with WFP, UNICEF and FAO, is making progress on a joint recovery and stabilization programme to respond to the high prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition in Aweil. The main pillars of the joint programme comprise promotion of food security, generation of sustainable livelihoods and revitalization of the local economy while restoring basic services and strengthening community security, peacebuilding and social cohesion.

From Monday 29 May to Tuesday 30 May, UNDP Acting Country Director, Jean Luc Stalon, as well as representatives of UNICEF, FAO and WFP will be accompanied by a high level delegation of development partners including the Ambassador of Japan to South Sudan, H.E. Kiya Masahiko and the Heads of Development Cooperation of Sweden and Germany. The purpose of the field visit is to review progress of the ongoing activities as well as engaging with the state government officials in view of the imminent launch of the joint UNDP, UNICEF, FAO and WFP recovery and stabilization programme. The delegation will visit the WFP general food distribution site, UNICEF and WFP nutrition center at Maduany, and UNDP Vocational Training Centre and community market.

The joint programme is a concrete response to the operationalization of the new way of working to rebalance humanitarian and development interventions in South Sudan with the aim of strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities.
