Statement by Foreign Minister Taro Kono on the attack on peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Government of Japan expresses its deepest condolences and extends its heartfelt sympathy to the Governments of Tanzania, the DRC and MONUSCO

TOKYO, Japan, December 11, 2017/APO Group/ --

Statement by Foreign Minister Taro Kono on the attack on peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

1. The attack against the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) at North Kivu on 7 December 2017 caused many casualties of Tanzanian peacekeepers as well as Armed Forces of the DRC. The Government of Japan expresses its deepest condolences and extends its heartfelt sympathy to the Governments of Tanzania, the DRC and MONUSCO. The Government of Japan offers sincere prayers for the victims and their bereaved families and wishes the injured peacekeepers a speedy recovery.

2. The Government of Japan strongly condemns the attack which deteriorates the security situation of the country. The Government of Japan is determined to continue to contribute to the international peace and stability, including the security situation of the DRC, in cooperation with the international community.
