Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize will on Monday 6 August 2018 provide a progress report on the municipal recovery programme that he announced in his Budget Vote speech, which entails intensive support and interventions in dysfunctional and distressed municipalities.

Minister Mkhize had announced that there were 87 distressed and dysfunctional municipalities and that only seven percent of municipalities in the country are functional. He announced that COGTA would intervene with programmes clustered into three main critical areas - governance and administration, financial management and service delivery.

The Minister will provide an update on progress made in these areas. He had also announced that he would deploy technical support teams in municipalities to assist as municipalities were failing to spend infrastructure funds due to lack of engineers, town planners and other key professionals.
