Japan-Libya Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Minister Kono stated that Japan, working closely with the international community, will support the process of inclusive discussion among Libyan people

On September 12, from 2 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, H.E. Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mr. Mohamed Al-Taher Hamouda Siala, Foreign Minister for Government of National Accord of Libya, during his visit to Egypt. The overview is as follows.

  1. In the beginning, Minister Kono stated that the stability of Libya is essential for the stability of Middle Eastern and African region as a whole, and noting that Libya plays a vital role in dealing with the issues of migration and refugees as well as in the fight against terrorism, such as against ISIL, Minister Kono stated that Japan, working closely with the international community, will support the process of inclusive discussion among Libyan people. 
  2. In response, extending his congratulations upon the success of the Japan-Arab Political Dialogue held on September 11, Minister Siala mentioned the long history of Japan-Libya relations and expressed his gratitude for the vocational training and the support from Japan through TICAD. In addition, Minister Siala explained the future prospects of the political process of Libya.
  3. Regarding the situation in North Korea, Minister Kono explained the necessity of increasing the pressure on North Korea with the international community and asked for support from Libya.
