Tamarinds and mangoes are usually a food source the communities can find around their isolated villages, but they are getting scarce and people are moving towards larger urban settlements in search for food and the children of these displaced people are forced to drop out school to help their parents in the search for food. Photo: WFP/Tsiory Andriantsoarana Southern Madagascar is spiralling into a humanitarian catastrophe, with 1.3 million people, almost half of the population needing immediate emergency food assistance. This is now peak lean season and delayed rainfall threatens people’s lives and livelihoods. People most hit are those living in remote villages where families do not have enough food to survive, some walk more than 10 kilometres in search of something to eat, with raw mangoes and tamarind often their only food source. Mothers can no longer breastfeed and are forced to give their infants water which is in unclean and in scarce supply. Those experiencing “crisis” or “emergency” hunger conditions—three times the number forecast mid-year—are mostly children and women. It is expected that most people in the affected regions will not be able to produce enough food next harvest season (starting from April 2021) to see them through the year. WFP began life-saving emergency food assistance reaching more than 100,000 people in Amboasary – the hardest hit district - and more than 400,000 people in 9 other districts since October. In December 2020, WFP also started providing cash-based assistance, where market conditions allowed and plans to reach 200,000 people by May 2021. Faced with emergencies and immediate needs in southern Madagascar, hard hit by a food and nutrition crisis, WFP plans to assist 900,000 people. US 35 million is urgently needed for this purpose.z Aina Andrianalizaha C C I ! 1AQ"aq#2 BR$3bCr%4S&5cs K !1 AQa"q2B#R3br$C4S%5cTst ? u\5 (}Rj?I;WgguWVwV$X8Tmև4´8b\goO^3,4J!kros]\-922:B@pn c_ iJQb @vr7b=xƛjZM}6Mzq.pj C,EtL `x[Bv#yݙ.[$/jI4Uɱy㮑G]4@R|)M> N$2unb^1 n&7O4_`" *h,Y6F:{YU4 ]MU)8Y{n>c˘ -o.->hM><{W^#BC:UJC91_WkSǻT`&}a0ʔGzeQԏ H(n>xg9*QHqЉ< 2Ο:Ih䞖696Bɚ@䴪c?he=T):DqdbD8n#|~wgir)VB HMM ~>+OHZj,)QAdi7ԓ#_\bK$@6`?>㎨21RT R͙hZr+=A*MI%F:]MlkKjB )WBUXPN|DByf1XL"F_$=\r)M28Qi܀{3nGЀ0 :=m9\&*S-muA 7yz9u*\q-0""mC\4'I)n$6ҧBZ %7|(U@]Zɤ;t*$4Ó邨P [g; ʎt20!%.,mOrtk*) -,ym@}mMӵNlKM`$GQP \xL S I ozrV^a]R\vN HI<\ pP]$95kq>sZRFb}l{bS8BU6=5Poϛ>QeJEJX$9vir&L%ZېO])WWPV{A rl<|_T~0!Enxᩒ`/լGA18#8ڟi}f w@@#hek,J1g( IA^\}l7_$p4's'Pr%6o$}J-n !`ōWI, ^ cI+eZ%DURMs5u.*dr۴}b{˻ :#j, ӎ!N7j'?G}W?MRr,.G{ZsD4:H`ȋWZ3qU+G'uەyHҊh )h2ܚk@x.,Y]71 ~q Th'jT,<~4*&S>!O' U$bO) ߨQR[KUIw A4x]r L ٨S#NLgTu$ ҒA l-@cK3$$HrKl9+Yju+LCrLaIbZڧP'@xH$$hH)."`m=o!;QR[q )ʊ?o$_ GP4 R{eD.b1ovb!=3$~CG#zM^c'[ZBN; UPdÏC,8i00M)m ڪZk x2D-3v":7pIrz2dYHޱs ĶV䥢E$/~" o!F3$p- |#dKdrP@QnӸ
