Engaging South Africa on FAO’s Internship, Volunteers and Fellowship programmes

The aim of the one-day seminar is to raise awareness about the FAO Internship, Volunteers and Fellowship programmes and to identify modalities and opportunities for collaboration, within the framework of South-South Cooperation

PRETORIA, South Africa, November 15, 2017/APO Group/ --

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representation in South Africa and the Partnerships and South-South Cooperation Division of FAO Headquarters, with the support of the South African Government will convene a National Round Table Discussion on the FAO Internship, Volunteers and Fellowship programmes on 17 November 2017, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
 

The aim of the one-day seminar is to raise awareness about the FAO Internship, Volunteers and Fellowship programmes and to identify modalities and opportunities for collaboration, within the framework of South-South Cooperation. 

It will be attended by representatives from Universities in South Africa, students, the Government, FAO interns and development partners.
 
FAO’s Global Internship, Volunteers and Fellows Programmes provide opportunities for university students, researchers, experienced specialists as well as the wider community members to work with FAO to realize a world free from hunger and malnutrition.

  • Who: A Representative of the Government of South Africa. Lewis Hove, FAO Representative in South Africa, a.i. Kazumi Ikeda-Larhed, FAO Deputy Director: Partnerships and South-South Cooperation Division.
  • Why: In the past five years, total 1 481 interns were recruited for FAO. However, the participation from Africa region is only ten percent on average. Moreover, there has not been any participant from universities based in South Africa. Given the prominent global standing of South Africa and its academic institutions, FAO seeks to significantly increase the number of diverse participation from South Africa.
