“The United States has long enjoyed a broad partnership with Egypt,” said Sarah Sewall, Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights at the start of her first visit to Cairo, “and I look forward to learning more about the challenges facing Egypt and the progress the country has made in addressing them.”  Dr. Sewall plans to meet and talk with government officials, religious figures, and civil society leaders during her four-day visit.

A longtime advocate for advancing civilian security and human rights around the world, Dr. Sewall will discuss cooperation with Egypt on countering extremism and terrorism, ensuring individual rights and freedoms, promoting women’s advancement, and protecting refugees.

Dr. Sewall was appointed Under Secretary of State in 2014.  Over the previous decade, Dr. Sewall taught at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she served as Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy and directed the Program on National Security and Human Rights.  She has also served in the U.S. Department of Defense as Assistant Secretary for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance.
