The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, is in Tunis today for a series of institutional meetings

Minister Alfano expressed his satisfaction for the important achievements made by the Tunisian people along their path for the strengthening of democratic institutions

The defense of democracy is a precious heritage for Tunisia

Minister Angelino Alfano was welcomed by Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi at the palace of the Presidency of the Republic, with the first meeting taking place at 10 a.m. During the cordial conversation, the Minister told his interlocutor that "Italy and Tunisia are united by strong historic, geographical and cultural bonds, let alone a profound friendship." Minister Alfano expressed his satisfaction for the important achievements made by the Tunisian people along their path for the strengthening of democratic institutions.

"The defense of democracy is a precious heritage for Tunisia. Democracy was fought for with determination and passion for freedom. Italy has ensured, and will continue ensuring, the utmost collaboration, at all levels, to Tunisian institutions," said Minister Alfano. "We are ready to offer cooperation at all levels in the economic and cultural sectors, as well as in the fight against terrorism and on the issue of migration," added the Minister.

Before bidding farewell to the President of the Republic, Minister Alfano told him that "President Mattarella is happy to welcome him to Italy on 8 February. We are working together to organise  a successful event and reach concrete results."

Minister Alfano received "a warm appreciation from President Essebsi for the important contribution Italian workers and entrepreneurs in Tunisia give to his country."
