NEW YORK, United States of America, February 12, 2016/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

Today, the Secretary-General spoke on the telephone with the Prime Minister-designate of Libya, Mr. Fayez Serraj. The Secretary-General commended Mr. Serraj’s hard work for the good of Libya over the past months, noting that he and the Presidency Council had made considerable progress under difficult circumstances. The Secretary-General encouraged Mr. Serraj to continue working with other members of the Presidency Council, and with his Special Representative, in order to iron out the final issues and submit a new list of proposed ministers to the House of Representatives soon.

The Secretary-General also spoke to the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, to discuss the latest developments in Libya. The Secretary-General thanked Egypt for its strong support for UN efforts in Libya, noting that what has been achieved so far would not have been possible without the help and commitment of Libya’s neighbours. The two leaders discussed the continued implementation of the Libyan Political Agreement, and the Presidency Council’s work towards the formation of a new list of nominees for the Government of National Accord.

In both calls, the Secretary-General emphasized the urgency to form a Government of National Accord, so that Libyans can address together the many challenges they are facing, including the threat of an expansion of Da’esh and economic decline.
