PRETORIA, South Africa, April 4, 2017/APO/ --

President Jacob Zuma will on Thursday, 06 April 2017, convene the 3rd Presidential Local Government Summit in Midrand, Johannesburg, under the theme “Transforming Municipal Spaces for Radical Social and Economic Development”.

The two day summit is convened to provide strategic direction for the new term of local government and discuss a focused action plan that would help transform local government to ensure radical socioeconomic transformation in line with the Back to Basics Programme (B2B).

The summit will review progress made towards strengthening the system of local government based on reflections of the successes and challenges of the B2B approach which is a building block for what the National Development Plan defines as developmental local governance. The summit will further launch the Back to Basics programme’s second phase which will focus, amongst others, reconfiguration of the district system to augment regional economic development, regional infrastructure planning and delivery, as well as spatial transformation.

President Zuma initiated the Presidential Local Government Summit in 2009 to provide a platform wherein the President engages with the leadership of all three spheres of government on developmental programmes that would help address challenges facing municipalities in a quest to improve service delivery.

The details of the summit are as follows:
Date: Thursday, 06 April 2017
Time: 09h00
Venue: Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand, Johannesburg
