Mohamed Ibn Chambas reaffirms UN support for peaceful elections in Burkina Faso

DAKAR, Senegal, November 30, 2015/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

On the eve of the 29 November 2015 presidential and legislative elections, the Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, calls on all candidates, political parties and citizens of Burkina Faso to ensure free, credible and peaceful elections.

Mr. Ibn Chambas has been closely following the preparations of the presidential and legislative elections. In September 2015, he met with the transition authorities to whom he reiterated UN support for the organization of credible and peaceful elections.

The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for West Africa commends transitional authorities for all measures taken to successfully complete the transition, despite the difficulties. Mr. Ibn Chambas also congratulates the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) for the efficient management of the electoral process that would allow people of Burkina Faso to peacefully exercise their constitutional right.

Mr. Ibn Chambas reaffirms the support and encouragements of the United Nations and the entire international community to the Burkinabe people in these historic moments for the entrenchment of democracy in Burkina Faso.
