Head of the European Union in Ghana Pays Courtesy Call on the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in Accra

The purpose of the meeting was for the European Union Ambassador to formally introduce himself to the new Minister and to discuss the support provided by the EU to the sectors covered by her Ministry

The Head of the European Union in Ghana Ambassador William Hanna on Tuesday14 March, 2017, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Ms. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, in her office in Accra.

The purpose of the meeting was for the European Union Ambassador to formally introduce himself to the new Minister and to discuss the support provided by the EU to the sectors covered by her Ministry.

It was also to re-establish the EU's commitment to Ghana in the fight against Illegal Unregulated Unreported (IUU) fishing, and to explore possible areas of new partnerships. The meeting was also used by the Ambassador to extend an invitation to Ghana to participate in the upcoming "Our Oceans Conference" in Malta from 5 - 6 October 2017 and organized by the EU.

Ambassador Hanna congratulated Ghana for the hard work, determination and dedication in the fight against IUU fishing and assured the Minister of the EU's continued support to Ghana and ECOWAS in the fight against IUU fishing

The Minister observed that having signed the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union, there should be sustained markets for Ghana's products especially as Ghana works to meet EU export standards.

She emphasized on the need for EU's continued support to Ghana by way of access to markets by downstream businesses where women are particularly involved.
