NAIROBI, Kenya, January 23, 2017/APO/ --

The Government of Japan has been providing funds to local non-profit organizations through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) since 1989.

Today, the official handing over ceremony of The Project for the Expansion of Mangoto Primary School, a GGP project, was held at Mangoto Primary School, Wempa Location, Murang’a County. The Grant Contract for this project was signed on 8th of December 2015 in the amount of 84,745 US Dollars, (approximately 8.5 million Ksh). The grant was for; the construction of 8 classrooms and 8 toilets, installation of a water tank, and for the purchase of furniture for the classrooms.

Prior to this project, the school had only 2 permanent classrooms to accommodate more than 500 pupils. The classes were hosted in makeshift classrooms constructed by the parents with sticks and iron sheets. Due to lack of furniture, many students had to sit on stones and share a table with up to 4 classmates. With the expansion of the facilities and provision of 250 desks and chairs, students will now be able to study in an environment that is more conducive to their success.

During the handing over ceremony, the First Secretary of Economic Cooperation Section at the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Shohei Sakai congratulated Mangoto Primary School for the successful completion of the project and shared his wish that with continued support from the community the students will improve their academic performance and achieve their dreams.

In his speech, Mr. Sakai briefly highlighted the various education projects that the Government of Japan has sponsored in Kenya. In addition to the construction of schools and dormitories across Kenya, the Government of Japan is an active partner in the development of human capital in the education sector. The fifteen year SMASE project, implemented between 1998 and 2013, focused on improving the quality of math and science education in the country.

In closing his remarks, he requested the community members to take personal responsibility for the success of Mangoto Primary School and its pupils.
